Stephen Ministry

What is Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry is a distinctively Christian ministry of providing one to one caring and confidential listening to persons struggling with life issues. We believe that God is the cure giver.

Who are the Stephen Ministers?

Stephen Ministers are trustworthy lay people from your own congregation who feel a call to serve God and His people. They are kind, comforting, compassionate individuals from diverse backgrounds and ages who have made a two year, voluntary commitment to act as a caregiver to those in difficult situations. After an initial interview process, 50 hours of training and bi-monthly supervision sessions in a structured environment and continuing education are required.

What does a Stephen Minister do?

A Stephen Minister is assigned to one person who has asked for their special help. Caregiving is provided by confidential listening, reflecting, praying, encouraging and referring to other resources when necessary. They are part of a support system that can be present with a person walking through a dark period in life into the light again. Women work with women; likewise men with men.

In what sort of crisis do Stephen Ministers serve?

Many troubling life circumstances bring about the need for someone to speak to and pray with in confidence. These may include a time of grief, divorce or separation, job loss, major stress, depression, loneliness, illness, hospitalization, childbirth, spiritual struggles.

How do I get a referral to a Stephen Minister for myself or a loved one?

Please call the church office for confidential information and referral to a Stephen Minister.

How can I become a Stephen Minister?

Please call the church office for information and to begin the interview process. Qualities such as trustworthiness, a loving and servant attitude, and a desire to help with the Lord’s work of caring for t\hose who hurt are essential. A two year commitment and time for training, caregiving and attending bi-monthly evening supervision meetings is necessary. The 50 hour training is scheduled once a year, over a 4 or 5 month time frame.
